The holiday season often gives us precious opportunities for generations to celebrate together. Nothing gladdens our hearts more than to celebrate the accomplishments of the youth of our community. So it is with great pleasure that the members of the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra will welcome 3 youthful violinists to take centre stage during our December 3, 2022 Holiday Concert as they perform the Vivaldi Concerto for 3 Violins in D Major, opus 36 with us this season.
Aedan Lowry is a 14-year-old student attending Westmount Charter School in Calgary. He began violin lessons at age 5 with Theresa Plotnick, and later with his father John Lowry, Associate Concertmaster of the Calgary Philharmonic. Last year, Aedan was Concertmaster of the Mount Royal Conservatory Sinfonia, and upon winning the concerto competition, performed Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Sinfonia and later with Kensington Sinfonia. He is currently Principal Second Violin of the Calgary Youth Orchestra. Aedan attended JVL Music in the Summer from ages 8-11, and last summer attended the Vancouver Island Music Academy. Earlier this year, he was a finalist in the Canadian Music Competition at Québec City.
Roland Ding is 13 years old and has been playing the violin since the age of 4. He has been studying violin with Jacob Lakirovich for 9 years. Roland has been an active participant in music festivals and competitions both at the regional and national levels, notably the North York Music Festival, Unionville Music Competitions, ORMTA competitions, and the Canadian Music Competition. He is the recent 12-year-old category National Champion of the 2022 Canadian Music Competition hosted in Quebec. In addition to solo repertoire, Roland enjoys playing orchestral music and collaborating in chamber ensembles at summer music camps such as JVL Music in the Summer, Cremona International Music Academy, as well as the Vancouver Island Music Academy. Aside from music, Roland enjoys spending time with his family and playing badminton. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform with the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra this winter and to add this experience to his musical journey.
Ethan Cui is currently a grade 8 student at TMS School. He started playing violin when he was 6 years old, and he has been learning violin with his teacher, Jacob Lakirovich. Ethan has performed with the Mooredale Youth Senior Orchestra for 3 years and he recently joined the SPO. He has taken the violin RCM level 10 exam, and is currently studying ARCT repertoire. Ethan has also been learning piano for 7 years and is currently studying RCM level 10 repertoire.
